Pesticides

Methyl salicylate is one of the most common additions to a wide range of products ranging from chewing gum wrappers to cartons for storing clothes:

“The pesticidal uses of methyl salicylate include vertebrate repellent on terrestrial and greenhouse food crops and as an insect repellent when incorporated into a coating on the internal and outer surfaces of cartons used to store consumer products like human and pet foods, animal feeds and nonfood items such as clothing and textiles.” [143]

I have also seen mentions of methyl salicylate washes for fruit and vegetable during storage which may explain why fruit and vegetables that are supposedly low in salicylate, such as pomegranate, can sometimes appear not to be. [144]

It is impossible to avoid all forms of salicylate but it is useful to have an overview of the type of places that they can crop in so that you can help understand some of the strange reactions you may experience that simply don’t make sense.
